Understanding the amplitudes of noise correlation measurements

چکیده

[1] Cross correlation of ambient seismic noise is known to result in time series from which station‐station travel‐time measurements can be made. Part of the reason that these cross‐correlation travel‐time measurements are reliable is that there exists a theoretical framework that quantifies how these travel times depend on the features of the ambient noise. However, corresponding theoretical results do not currently exist to describe how the amplitudes of the cross correlation depend on such features. For example, currently it is not possible to take a given distribution of noise sources and calculate the cross correlation amplitudes one would expect from such a distribution. Here, we provide a ray‐theoretical framework for calculating cross correlations. This framework differs from previous work in that it explicitly accounts for attenuation as well as the spatial distribution of sources and therefore can address the issue of quantifying amplitudes in noise correlation measurements. After introducing the general framework, we apply it to two specific problems. First, we show that we can quantify the amplitudes of coherency measurements, and find that the decay of coherency with station‐station spacing depends crucially on the distribution of noise sources. We suggest that researchers interested in performing attenuation measurements from noise coherency should first determine how the dominant sources of noise are distributed. Second, we show that we can quantify the signal‐to‐noise ratio of noise correlations more precisely than previous work, and that these signal‐to‐noise ratios can be estimated for given situations prior to the deployment of seismometers. It is expected that there are applications of the theoretical framework beyond the two specific cases considered, but these applications await future work.

Noise effect on fatigue: correlation between the subjective and objective indicators.

Introduction: Fatigue is the exhaustion of the body or spirit that can be caused by stress, excessive work, drug use, or physical or mental illness. Fatigue is a factor in reducing productivity and incidents. Therefore, measuring is important. The aim of this study was to determine the fatigue measurement measurements based on objective and objective indices. Materials and Methods: A cross-s...

Background: Different studies have shown that Otoacoustic Emission (OAEs) is generated by Outer Hair Cells (OHCs) and these sensory cells are first structures exposed to damage of high level noise. Therefore minor impairment in OHCs can lead to lack of response of OAE. The purpose of the current study is to compare the pure tone thresholds, Transient Evoked Otoacoustic Emission (TEOAE...

Ground Motion Studies and Modeling for the Interaction Region of a Linear Collider

Ground motion may be a limiting factor in the performance of future linear colliders because it causes continuous misalignment of the focusing and accelerating elements. Understanding the ground motion, including finding driving mechanisms for the motion, studying the dependence on geology, local engineering, etc., and creating ground motion models that permit evaluation of the collider perform...

Statistical Wavelet-based Image Denoising using Scale Mixture of Normal Distributions with Adaptive Parameter Estimation

Removing noise from images is a challenging problem in digital image processing. This paper presents an image denoising method based on a maximum a posteriori (MAP) density function estimator, which is implemented in the wavelet domain because of its energy compaction property. The performance of the MAP estimator depends on the proposed model for noise-free wavelet coefficients. Thus in the wa...
